A rare 1984 Specialized Stumpjumper, restored from the ground up with a focus on preservation rather than reinvention.

This is one of those bikes that did not need to become something else. The original character was too good to lose: lugged steel frame, early mountain bike proportions, SunTour components, Araya rims and a five-speed freewheel setup. Rather than over-modernise it, the bike has been carefully stripped, cleaned, treated and rebuilt as a sympathetic restoration.

The hubs were stripped down and revealed sealed bearings. The original cup-and-cone bottom bracket was removed and showed the expected rust for a bike of this age. Small metal parts were treated in rust converter, the five-speed SunTour freewheel was degreased and treated, and the original SunTour drivetrain was preserved wherever possible.

The upgrades have been kept deliberately restrained and focused mainly on contact points and usability: new vintage-style grips, Kool-Stop salmon brake pads, Ultradynamico Cava tyres, SimWorks Bubbly pedals and a tan Brooks Swift saddle. The silver-toned cable housing keeps the bike visually calm and period-correct.

The result is not a neo-retro conversion. It is a rare early Stumpjumper brought back carefully, with enough improvement to make it ride beautifully while keeping the soul of the original bike intact.

This is a restored vintage bicycle with visible age, patina and wear. It has not been made to look new — it has been made usable, honest and special.
