fully rebuilt 1989 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp, reworked from the frame up as a practical, comfortable and characterful all-road / ATB build.

This is not a catalogue restoration. The aim was to preserve the original bike, its paint and its history, while rebuilding it into something much closer in spirit to a modern Rivendell or Blue Lug-style machine.

The bike was completely stripped down before being rebuilt. The bottom bracket was serviced, a new headset fitted, the frame internally rust protected, and the original paint carefully T-Cut and polished. Rather than hiding every mark, some of the original chips and wear have been picked out with gold fill, leaving the bike with the patina you would expect from a nearly 40-year-old mountain bike.

The build centres around a Nitto × Rivendell Bosco Bullmoose bar, giving the bike a relaxed and upright riding position, paired with Dia-Compe bar-end friction shifters, fresh Nissen cabling and a completely refreshed braking setup.

The original triple drivetrain remains, with a Shimano Biopace crankset and an upgraded Shimano XTR rear derailleur.

The ride

The large swept-back Bullmoose bars completely change the character of the bike.

Rather than feeling like a stretched-out early mountain bike, it has been set up as a relaxed, upright and extremely comfortable machine for mixed-surface riding, commuting, woodland trails and general everyday use.

I am around 5'9½" / 176cm and have ridden the bike comfortably in the setup shown, although the underlying frame is a large 60cm frame and would traditionally suit a taller rider.

If fit is a concern, I am happy to provide any additional measurements.

Condition

The bike has been rebuilt mechanically to a very high standard, but the frame retains its original finish.

There are scratches, chips and marks throughout from decades of use, all of which form part of the character of the bike.

There is also a dent to the top tube, which is visible in the photographs. This is reflected in the description and should be taken into consideration when purchasing.

This is therefore not a pristine collector's bike. It is a sympathetically preserved and extensively rebuilt vintage Stumpjumper intended to be ridden.

The saddle bag shown in the photographs is not included in the sale.
